An F-14 Tomcat lifts off from the flight deck of an aircraft carrier.
Original Caption: Two F-15 Eagles of the 3d Wing, Elmendorf Air Force Base, Alaska in a tight break during a training sortie. Alaskan-based F-15 Eagles maintain alert status as they are only a few minutes flying time from bases belonging to the former Soviet Union. The F-15C Eagle is the primary air-superiority fighter of the U.S. Air Force. A huge fighter (63 feet long with a wingspan of 42 feet) its claim to fame is its speed, thrust to weight ratio, and its powerful radar. It can track high-speed objects from any altitude down to tree top level. The Eagle can carry up to eight air to air missiles including the AIM-7, AIM-9 and AIM-120 AMRAAM. It also carries a 20mm Gatlin gun for self defense. The F-15C is flown by the U.S. Air Force and the Israeli Air Force and its air to air kills are legendary. Of the 39 air to air kills by U.S. forces in Desert Storm, 36 were claimed by F-15 Eagle pilots. Primary contractor is McDonnell Douglas. Powered by two Pratt & Whitney F100-PW-220 turbofans the F-15C has a maximum speed of 2.5 Mach (two and half times the speed of sound).
